ICPC and NUC to go after Illegal Universities

ICPC, NUC Begin Crackdown On Illegal Universities

By SaharaReporters, New York
The Independent Corrupt Practices And Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the National University Commission (NUC) have started a joint nationwide operation to crack down on illegal “degree-awarding” institutions in the country.
Speaking at the 22nd Annual International Conference on African Literature and English Language (ICALEL) at the University of Calabar last week, the chairman of the ICPC, Mr.Ekpo Nta, first disclosed the existence of 67 such institutions.
In a press statement today, the Chairman of ICPC/NUC Task team, Professor Olu Aina, disclosed that of that number, 57 have so far been identified.  Forty-one of them have operational addresses while others are without known fixed addresses.
The scandalous list includes an Imo State University in Abuja, and an Imo State University in Delta State; University ofCarribean in Ikorodu; Irish University Business School inAmuwo Odofin; University of Lagos on Ikorodu Road, Lagos;University of Ibadan in Fadeyi, Lagos; Volta University College, Aba; Halifax Gateway University,  at Ojuelegba Roundabout, Lagos; and Atlanta International University, Okija.
Professor Aina announced that the crackdown would seal the premises of the institutions involved, seize their properties, make arrests, and execute such other actions deemed fit.
This action, he noted, is the first in the series of implementing the outcome of an ongoing ICPC/NUC University System Study and Review, for which ICPC obtained a Federal High Court warrant to crack down on illegal degree-awarding mills.
He further stated that an Inter-Agency Task Team comprising of ICPC, the NUC, the Police and the Nigeria Civil Defence Corps will continue the exercise until all corrupt practices and impunity associated with the physical existence of such illegal institutions ceases completely.
On whether the ICPC and NUC would compensate the students in the illegal institutions, Professor Aina said they had no prerequisite qualifications before being admitted, but that the NUC would "guide us appropriately."

ILLEGAL UNIVERSITIES  IN NIGERIA

The essence of this statement  is to let you know that in keeping with its warning last week, ICPC has today Wednesday 15th May 2013  commenced a nation-wide operation to seal the premises of identified illegal "Universities", seize their properties, make arrests, and execute such other actions it deems fit.

This action, is the first in the series of implementing the outcome of an ongoing ICPC/NUC University System Study and Review, for which ICPC sort and obtained a Federal High Court Warrant to crack down on illegal degree-awarding mills.
An Inter-Agency Task Team comprising of ICPC, the National Universities Commission, the Police and the Nigeria CivilDefence Corps will continue the exercise until all corrupt practices and impunity associated with the physical existence of such illegal institutions cease completely
We know it is a world-wide phenomenon which occurs wherever demand for educational or other services far outweigh supply but we are determined to eliminate it from critical sectors like education in Nigeria.
Members of the public are advised to visit the NUC website for the list of these illegal degree-awarding institutions and Centers. A lot of them do not have fixed addresses while some have become itinerant, changing locations continuously to beat the law.
School Proprietors and landlords, by this notice, are advised to be wary of lending or hiring out their premises for these "after-school- hours and weekend" institutions to avoid having their premises being sealed or seized.
We solicit your cooperation and that of all well-meaning Nigerians including Civil Societies, parents and prospective students to continue providing us with relevant information to help check corrupt activities that mortgage the future of our youths.

Further details will be placed on our website: www.icpc.gov.ng

Thank you
Professor 0lu Aina
