Tragedy struck in Sagbokoji Village, Apapa, Lagos State, on Tuesday after a commercial boat carrying some passengers capsized.
Although the number of passengers aboard the boat could not immediately be ascertained, it was learnt that two persons drowned, while about seven others were rescued.
It was learnt that the boat was heading towards the Lagoon area of Apapa, around 8am, when its engine developed a technical fault. Some of the passengers reportedly swam back to the village to alert other boat operators.
It was said before the operators arrived the scene, the boat had capsized. Local divers were said to have rescued nine persons.
The Lagos State Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Damasus Ozoani, confirmed the incident.
Ozoani said rescue efforts were still ongoing, adding that two corpses had been recovered while seven others were rescued.
He said, “Details are still sketchy, but we learnt that a boat capsized at Sagbokoji Village. Seven victims were rescued alive while two men were suspected to have drowned.
“The deceased’s identities are still unknown but the Marine Police are on top of the situation.”
